FAQ
Where did the concept for Lily come from?
Lily was born from the idea: Can the experience of playing a musical instrument be captured by a game?
Playing a musical instrument can be a fun and artistically expressive activity for musicians, as well as regularly being associated with evoking 'flow state' – the feeling of being 'in the zone' in focused, relaxed enjoyment of the activity.
Lily attempts to evoke a similarly creative and relaxing experience for players of all musical abilities by offering a playful, accessible, and expansive environment for musical exploration.
How does it work?
Players compose original musical pieces by creating lily ponds containing lilies and lily pads.
A lily is a musical flower. Each petal creates a musical note, with petals being played one after another moving clockwise around the lily. Players can change a lily's melody by moving its petals up and down – the higher the petal is, the higher its note will be.
Lilies can be created with between 1-8 petals, with a lily's petal count determining the length of its melody. Using lilies with different petal counts can quickly build up interesting, shifting musical loops.
There are currently 15 types of lilies to choose from, each with its own unique sound and a number of musical settings including tempo, musical scale, loop count, and volume.
Lilies can be placed upon lily pads. Lily pads are used to control the playback of lilies over time. For example, a Sequencer lily pad will play each of its lilies one after another, allowing a player to sequence melodies. Alternatively, Ensemble lily pads will play all of their lilies at once, enabling the player to start many lilies together.
In addition to placing individual lilies directly on a lily pad, lily pads can also be connected to other lily pads to form 'chains'. This enables the creation of longer sequences and intricate compositions.
